Life in the Dominican Order

He carried out his duties, which included begging for alms and assisting in the infirmary, with unwavering joy and compassion. Gerard’s reputation for holiness spread throughout the community, and he soon became known for his gift of healing.

Miracles and Intercessions

Saint Gerard Majella is renowned for the numerous miracles attributed to his intercession, particularly related to childbirth. Pregnant women who prayed to him often experienced safe and painless deliveries. In one instance, Gerard saved a pregnant woman from a life-threatening illness by placing his hands on her belly and praying for her.

Gerard’s intercession also extended beyond childbirth. He is believed to have healed the sick, exorcised demons, and provided guidance and protection to those in need. His reputation as a miracle worker attracted countless pilgrims to the Dominican friary where he lived.

Death and Canonization

Saint Gerard Majella’s life was cut short on October 16, 1755, at the age of 29. He died from tuberculosis, which he contracted while nursing an infected fellow friar. His body was interred in the Church of San Gerardo Maiella in Muro Lucano, where it remains a popular destination for pilgrims seeking his intercession.

Gerard Majella was canonized as a saint by Pope Pius X in 1904. His feast day is celebrated on October 16th.
